Recycle Cell Phones at Oakland Zoo

The Oakland Zoo is a committed partner and advocate for the ECO-CELL program. The organizations are doing truly great work to educate, inform, and inspire the public to re-think the connection between our electronic devices and the impact on wildlife habitats in the Congo and elsewhere. And we join them in this call to action.

Zoo Atlanta and ECO-CELL have teamed up to recycle cell phones and save gorillas. As an added incentive in 2012, Zoo Atlanta has launched a promotional program named “Call4Gorillas“. The program includes outreach to schools, universities, businesses, and community groups to recycle electronics to support gorilla conservation efforts.

We are pleased to see action and political pressure to address some of the concerns that we’ve been championing for years. When ECO-CELL began in 2003, one of our goals was to educate the general public about the “true cost” of the electronic devices we use everyday. Destruction, violence, and bloodshed — all are components of our “smart-phones” and modern “conveniences.”
