The Riverdale YM-YWHA Simon Senior Center is collecting old phones as part of a recycling program that gives cash to centers that participate.

The center already collects boutique items and books, and holds regular sales to help raise funds to support programs for seniors. As part of this new initiative, the company Eco-Cell will collect the phones from the center and recycle them. According to the group, cell phones and their accessories contain many toxic substances such as arsenic, antimony, cadmium, cobalt, copper, lead and zinc. Some pose serious threats to the environment and public health.

A green collection box has been placed in the Riverdale Y’s lobby, at 5625 Arlington Ave.
