Popula5on: Less than 4,000
Grauer’s gorilla, also known as the eastern lowland gorilla, is found the Democra5c Republic of Congo (DRC). Today, this subspecies is to the primary tropical forest of eastern DRC – most notably in Biega and Maiko Na5onal Parks, but a substan5al por5on of its falls outside these areas in the vast, yet legally unprotected forest separates them.

What might have been a bleak outlook for the subspecies just a couple of decades ago has brightened in recent years due to conserva5on efforts. Despite ongoing civil conflict, poaching and an encroaching human popula5on, both popula5ons of mountain gorillas have increased in numbers. -WWF
Western Lowland Gorilla
-
Status: Cri5cally Endangered

Popula5on: 316,000
The western lowland gorilla is the most numerous and widespread gorilla subspecies. Popula5ons can be found in Cameroon, the African Republic, the Democra5c Republic of Congo and Equatorial as well as in large areas in Gabon and the Republic of Congo. The number of western lowland gorillas is not known because they some of the most dense and remote rainforests in Africa. Significant popula5ons s5ll exist, including in isolated swamps and the remote forests of the Republic of Congo

The rarest species of great ape in the world, Cross River gorillas are similar in appearance to western lowland gorillas, but have a different shaped skull. They tend to have redder or greyer fur than eastern gorillas.
Cross River gorillas were thought to be ex5nct following the 1960s civil war in Nigeria. However, sigh5ngs were recorded during the 1980s, and small numbers of the sub-species were rediscovered in Cameroon and Nigeria on the banks of the Cross River.
